Cyril Crone RIP

Cyril Crone……Happy Days.
Just those four words. Self explanatory. Etched forever in our memories.

A pocket dynamo of fun and laughter. A Big man in a small frame.

Full of mischief, devilment and camaraderie.

An absolute Terenure man through and through, Purple White and Black ran through his veins along with the odd pint of Guinness.

From his family butchers shop in Terenure Village he learned his trade and communication skills. He was a consummate conversationalist. He was always at home in the middle of any group holding court and telling yarns be it down in the Clubhouse in Lakelands on a Sunday afternoon with his close mates John, Joe and Niall and a wider audience of regulars or on a cricket tour to St. Tropez, Berlin or Milan where he was always feted by our hosts who simply fell in love with his infectious personality.

His love of Rugby and Terenure College RFC is reknown. He supported the Club all his life and was passionate about the history and future of Rugby in Lakelands.

His transition to Taverner cricket came about when fellow past pupils Paul Ryan and Bosco Morrissey and others started the Terenure College Taverners in 1980.

Cyril became an enthusiastic member. His unorthodox bowling action and W.G.Grace style of batting made him an instant favourite for both home and opposition teams alike. When the College Taverners evolved into The Walnuts he embraced the new found drive and was to the fore in making every Tour a successful memory. From Croatia to Sweden. France and Italy and so many other destinations he was the Tour Jester keeping us in fits of laughter and winning over the opposition if not on the pitch certainly off it…

That said he managed some individual feats of brilliance catching a screamer at silly mid on in Kolswa Sweden in the Midnight Cup and hitting a Four on the last ball against St.Tropez CC in the Polo grounds. The memory of him being carried off the pitch shoulder high by the opposition in Potsdam Germany will stay with me forever.

Our deepest sympathy to Wendy and Graham on such a great loss for them and their families.

Cyril was a great family man and loved his family dearly and it was so evident they loved him back in equal amount. Cyril has gone to join his beloved Mary who passed away 2 years ago.

We will miss him so much in The Walnuts. He is irreplaceable. A one off.

Forever Terenure College RFC. Forever a Walnut.

It all depends on you men

Show that you are True men

Play the game and Fight for fame

That’s what we expect from Terenure men.

Our thoughts are with his children; Wendy and Graham, his sister Irene, his grandchildren and extended family.

Cyril Crone….Happy Days.

May you rest in peace friend.
