The inaugural Fiachra Treacy Memorial Disability Tag Rugby Blitz

A very special message from the Terenure Tigers patron, Joe Schmidt all the way from New Zealand to mark the inaugural tag rugby blitz. T
he ‘Nure Tigers held their first disability Tag Rugby Blitz, with 175 players from 11 clubs participating.
Something we hope to see continue for many years to come.

The Terenure Tigers are a Disability Tag Rugby Team for boys and girls aged 6 to 16 years, with either a learning or a physical disability who can’t play mainstream rugby but who want to be part of a club and who want to wear the jersey!

The Tigers have their fun training session most Sundays at noon.

Come along, have a coffee and a chat with some of the Terenure Tiger coaches and see if it may suit your child!

For more than ten years Leinster Rugby and the IRFU have been supporting the Disability Tag rugby programme run throughout the province. There are now 16 clubs fielding Disability rugby teams in Leinster, with many other clubs hoping to do the same in the future.

The aim is to provide children and adults with either a learning or a physical disability the opportunity to learn to play tag rugby in a safe and fun environment while also building social skills and boosting confidence. In Terenure College RFC, the Tigers are in their seventh season and cater for players, both boys and girls ages 6 – 16 years old.

The primary focus is to improve fitness, encourage basic tag rugby skills and have lots of fun! The key is to provide a comfort-zone for these children, where, once they become familiar with the environment and the people, they relax a little and ultimately want to be part of the team. Wearing a jersey no doubt does an awful lot to boost confidence and give a sense of ‘belonging’.

Training time is 12 midday every Sunday and we are invited to other blitzes from other Tag Disability Clubs throughout the season, which is fantastic for the players to play matches and travel to other clubs.

If you think Tigers may work for your child – come down on a Sunday morning and give it a go! If your child is unsure about taking part – a little time  spent observing on the sideline has often helped a future player to take that first step. Come to Lakelands and see what Tigers is all about.

Also, if you would like to get involved in coaching the Tigers, please do get in touch. No coaching skills necessary, these will be provided… just an interest and enthusiasm to connect with these fantastic players is needed!
